This Reliability test of automotive IC is mostly based on the AEC-Q100 (for IC chip), AEC-Q101 (for discrete components), AEC-Q102(Discrete Optoelectronic), AEC-Q104(Multichip Module) and AEC-Q200 (for passive components) specifications from the Automotive Electronics Council (AEC). Though featuring stricter test conditions than consumer IC specification, they are JEDEC or MIL-STD centered along with some special specifications (e.g. EMC verification).
There are two prerequisites to get into supply chain of Tier-1 automotive electronics brands in the automotive industry: one is compliance with reliability standards AEC-Q100 (for IC chip), AEC-Q101 (for discrete
components), AEC-Q102(Discrete Optoelectronic), AEC-Q104(Multichip Module) and AEC-Q200 (for passive components) by AEC; the other is compliance with IATF 16949 specifications (Quality Management System) of Zero Defect supply chain quality management standards.

FAQ
Is IC design firm required to conform to IATF 16949?
The IATF 16949 is the automotive manufacturing industry exclusive management system covering product design, development, production, installation, and service on site. That is, facilities with production and manufacturing lines. The IC design industry is not covered by IATF 16949 as it has no production line. However, in order to meet the MAQMSR( minimum automotive quality management system requirements for sub-tier suppliers) , IC design houses are required to design and develop products according to the five core tools of AIAG (Automotive Industry Action Group). In addition, all the contractors of IC design houses who support the industry for production and manufacturing are mandatory to be compliant with IATF 16949 and the IC design houses are required to monitor the supply chain during mass production in the future.
What certificates are required by IC design firms?
The IECQ AQP (automotive electronics quality certification program) is the standard required by IC design firms exempted from TS16949 certification. The IECQ AQP program verifies electronic components and product quality and reliability by joint monitoring and testing with third parties to validate compliance with standard and demonstrate to automotive manufacturers and customers compliance of product quality and reliability with relevant verification program.
