iST(TWSE:3289) today (June 10, 2014) announced its net revenues for May 2014: On a consolidated basis, revenues for May 2014 were approximately NT$154 million, an increase of 13.74% from the same period in 2013. Revenue in this month has maintained in the high-grade since March, which set a monthly Top 1 record ever.
iST said, “revenue for May came up to a brilliant result, owing to the growing demands of reliability and failure analysis of Cross-platform system, such as Smart hand-hold devices, Automobile electronics and LED market. On top of that, ITS (Innovative Turnkey Solution), a subsidiary company of iST, has set a highest record of sales recently, which did a good turn to iST’s revenue.
iST specifically mentioned the LED certification: In the end of May, iST assisted TSSL (TSMC Solid State Lighting Ltd.) in passing the Energy Star® LM-80 testing requirement regarding the TMG series of LED component after 9 months of strict test.
Only a few Taiwan manufacturers use Flip chip as a COB (Chip on board) product of LED, and TMG series of TSSL, is a handful of products that being accredited by Energy Star®. So far, there are other LED products of TSSL under testing by iST with chance to pass the Energy Star® LM-80 requirement by the end of this year, iST said expectedly.
Furthermore, the upgraded material analysis of iST has been started in May, which brings in a growing sales, and raises the capacity utilization obviously.
Look ahead to June, iST not only steps up the High-speed A/V interface connectivity testing (HDMI/ MHL/ HDCP), but announces its formal engagement in solder joint reliability test services of wearable flexible print circuits (FPC), expecting to resolve reliability issues encountered by IC designers and FPC suppliers regarding wearable products, for ensuring the yield in IC assembly of wearable products. Major international IC design companies have come to iST for job consignments.
iST further pointed out that since the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in the USA and Mobile World Congress (MWC), iST finds it for sure that wearable applications are already focusing on the global technical industry that attract the eyesight of the global market. In Computex Taipei, which closed just recently, wearable smart devices had no doubt become the center of all the competitions.
Since the beginning of 2014, major chip manufacturers in the market such as Skyworks, Intel, Qualcomm, and MediaTek have aggressively launched wearable product solutions.
However, the quality of wearable products faces more severe challenges than general electronic products. Rigid PCBs are used in general electronic products while flexible printed circuits (FPCs) are used in wearable products. Solder joints of components on the FPC have to sustain external forces of greater amplitude owing to the flexible nature of the FPC (even when the component is not positioned at a bend). How to improve reliability of wearable products is a common goal to achieve for both IC designers and FPC manufacturers. And this demand will be an opportunity for iST to raise the sales of wearable products testing.
