MOSFET (Metallic Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) becomes the inevitable power component of automotive electronics and EV (electric vehicle) to cope with the diversified applications of automotive electronic products and the higher request for low power consumption. However, customers have run into a problem of short capacity of MOSFET in current market. To address this issue, iST announced today (June 27, 2018) its entry into the MOSFET Wafer backend process integrated services. iST has already done the trial run for more than 20 customers from the domestic and overseas markets, including major wafer foundry houses, international IDMs and IC designers by the end of Q1 2018, with small production kicking off in Q2.

iST expected, it will have a monthly wafer backend engineering capacity of 20,000 8-inch wafers by the end of Q3, with order volume estimated at 10,000 pieces, and the corresponding numbers will expand to 30,000 and 20,000 pieces, respectively by the end of Q4.

iST’s chairman Danny Yu particularly talked about the future direction of the new business. The “MOSFET Wafer Backend Process Integrated Services” established in iST’s science park plant 2 with space about 20,000 square meters, has started trial-run services and quality check for customers respectively in Q1 and Q2 2018.

iST explained, the overall profits and gross margins fell due to the effort of new business has yet to translate into meaningful revenues in Q1 2018. However, the profitability will improve after capacity is opened.

Yu also stressed that the Q1 was the trough for the company, and iST will see its revenues and profits surge quarter by quarter, year by year along with the gradual ramp-up of MOSFET wafer backend process integrated services, adding that the firm’s goal of scoring explosive profit growth for 2019 will remain unchanged.

iST said that the firm’s wafer backend process integrated services contains special processing services needed between front-end wafer foundry and back-end packaging operations, which are available for both 8-inch and 6-inch wafers, including front side metallization (FSM), BGBM wafer thinning, backside grinding (BG) and backside metallization (BM). What is worth mentioning that iST is one of a few sources in current market which is capable to provide both electroless-plating and sputtering services specific to FSM, so as to create the integrated solution for customers.

Yu said that iST has decided to tap into the MOSFET wafer process field, mainly because when iST has become the leading automotive verification laboratory, the company has found the lack of wafer thinning and surface process services available for customers between the foundry and packaging operations.

In addition, to provide an one-stop MOSFET backend solution including WLCSP (wafer-level chip scale package), CP(chip probing) and DPS (Die Processing Service) to customers, iST is in cooperation with its subsidiary, Innovative Turnkey Solution (ITS). Thus, this new business is not only expected to boost the revenues of iST, but also rapidly drives ITS’ future revenues.

Founded in 1994, iST began its business from IC circuit debugging and modification and gradually expanded its scope of operations, including Failure Analysis, Reliability Verification, Material Analysis, Automotive Electronic Verification Platforms and Signal Integrity Testing Services. iST has offered full-scope verification and analysis services to the IC engineering industry, its customers cover the whole spectrum of the electronics industry from IC design to end products.

In response to iST’s mission of providing integrated solutions to customers, iST not only focuses on its core laboratory services but also enters the mass production services of wafer backend process. http://www.istgroup.com
